Hamline Recognition

There was no "end of the school year gathering" at Hamline University, as the last "gathering" that took place there was pre-COVID back in March. So there was a slideshow sent out with a message from the University's President. In the "Faculty & Staff Recognitions" section, my name popped up for some recent exhibitions. Here are 4 slides from that slideshow:

"Director's Award" from the The In Art Gallery

I was recently notified that I had a piece accepted to The In Art Gallery's June exhibition entitled "The Premier Exhibition." Not only that, but my piece won The Director's Award which comes with a cash prize!

"The Premier Exhibition's" main page, with my piece at the top.

The funny thing is that I shot this photo on a Wednesday, and then I was notified 8 days later that it was accepted into this show and won the "Director's Award." That's a personal best for me! Such a quick turn-around.

It's not my most interesting 4 a.m. photo BY FAR, but it's incredibly timely. It's part of a greater discussion right now. So that must have made it more interesting to the juror. (I haven't heard any specifics as to what the juror/gallery thought of my piece, and I'll share them here if they let me know.) It's pretty common to have discussions like this about who's working with an all-around interesting idea, and who's working with an idea that works because it is timely. And this is a clear example of the latter.

Thanks to The In Art Gallery for the award!

Show at the Minnesota Center for Photography

I interrupt my photo blog spring hiatus to invite you to a show. “Photocentric 2007” opens this Saturday, March 31st at the Minnesota Center for Photography. The opening is from 6-9 pm, and I’ll be there for at least the first half of the event. The show runs through May.

Also, I just found out that one of my pieces in a show in Texas was awarded a “Purchase Award.” Super-duper! OK, back to our regularly scheduled blog-pause. I’ll be back by June.

Thanks

Since the NY Times article was published, I’ve been hearing from old friends, new acquaintances, and complete strangers. The response has been very warm. I just want to send out a big "THANK YOU" to everyone who has taken the time to send a little note or to inquire about my work. It’s always great to hear from anyone. Thanks for the notes.

Also, here are a few new places my work appears online:

More About Winning the Golden Light Award!

About one week ago, I was informed that I had won the Maine Photographic Workshops Golden Light Award Grand Prize in the Photographic Project Award Program. A few days later, I was informed that I had also won their Annual Photographic Print Competition in the Social Document category. There will be a show in Rockport, Maine that will showcase 4 prints each from different photographers around the world. They asked me to send 7 images. And one of my images, Homecoming Queen, was chosen as the frontpiece for the show! (This was also the piece that won the award in the Social Document category.) Below are the 7 pieces that made it into the show:

Winning the GLA Grand Prize didn’t put any cash in my pocket (unfortunately), but I did win a spot in this great exhibition that will go up shortly. I also won some great prizes (many of which only fellow photo geeks will appreciate):

• $1,700.00 grant in tuition and fees to attend a Master Class at The Workshops
• Two-hour consultation with Photo Consultant Mary Virginia Swanson
• Leica C-LUX 1 digital camera (Black)
• Gitzo G1327 tripod & G1378M head from Bogen
• Gift certificate to Modern Postcard for 500 4 1/4 X 6 postcards
• Crumper photo bag
• Gift certificate to Archival Methods for $100.00
• One-year subscription to LensWork

I won a few more things for winning the Social Document category as well.

The Golden Light Awards Grand Prize!

This morning, I received an incredible phone call. About 2 weeks ago, I entered my work in a contest called the Golden Light Awards in Rockport Maine. I entered the project competition for a body of work. I had trouble deciding what one of 6 categories to enter. I wanted to enter in the “Documentary & Photojournalism” category, but my work is moving away from being documentary in nature. So, to be fair, I entered in the “Personal & Fine Art” category. There were some prizes listed, as well as awards for the top winner in each division.

But it turns out it didn’t matter what category I entered, because I was informed this morning that I was chosen as the overall Grand Prize Winner!! How spectacular is that?! The details are still coming in as to what all of this means, but I know that I’ll be showing some prints in Maine (possibly in New York as well), I’ll receive free tuition to a class at the Maine Photographic Workshops, and I’ve won a handful of photo-related prizes (digital camera, gift certificates to photo-related business, etc.). I’ll keep you posted!

P.S. Contact sheet images are coming soon...Stay tuned.
